Putin Promises ‘Consultations’ with US on Cyber issues in Press Conference!

A Press Conference in Geneva, Switzerland by Russian President Putin, following a bilateral summit with US President Biden, revealed some Russian thinking with regard to cyber security matters.

Following a question by CNN, the following comments were elicited.

‘The biggest cyber-attacks in the world are against the US, Canada & UK’ explained President Putin. ‘Our cyber space is not as vulnerable. We gave an exhaustive response to US enquiries about issues.’

‘We believe that cyber-space is extraordinarily important!’ ‘to both the US & to Russia’ further stated President Putin.

Russian Health Service

He also mentioned an attack on an important Russian health service, appearing to vaguely claim it was ‘co-ordinated’ in the US, who also had no interest in resolving the matter. In addition, he revealed 10 requests from the US, incl. 2 this year, concerning alleged cyber-attacks on the US emanating from Russia, & claimed they got an ‘exhaustive response from us.’

It was further alleged, that in turn, the US received from Russia 45 similar demands, & the year before that 35, & claimed not to have been given a single reply. ‘We therefore have some work on our plate’ he exclaimed.

‘We understand about cyber-attacks on the US pipeline, & that a ransom was paid, although some money was recovered.’ he outlined.

Consultative Process

‘We must engage in a consultative process on this important issue.’ He observed.

‘We encounter cyber-attacks in Russia every year. The US make insinuations about Russia & cyber attacks’ he mentioned.

His tone appeared matter of fact, but it is not possible to independently verify specific claims at this time.

Rhetoric

Further anti-US sarcastic claims were also made more generally by President Putin including concerning shootings in the US, torture in US prisons, militarising the Arctic, riots following the George Floyd killing, & the alleged shooting down of civilian helicopters in Iraq, so perhaps cyber claims made must be seen within the context of all this rhetoric.
